First Shiloh Baptist Church History (Summary)

The idea of First Shiloh began early in the 19th century.  The plot of land on which the church now stands was given to slaves of the community by Zemula Walker, to be used as a place of worship.  In June 1835 the slaves were permitted to organize themselves as an Association of Worshippers.  In 1855 the tract of land was sold to Walter Towner.  Towner was instructed to let the slaves continue using the church plot as a place of worship free from any charges.  In 1863 Bristow Buggs a trusted slave of Towner, was in possession of the tract of land until his owner returned to this country.
